Timeline of 1700s
- The Land Ordinance of 1785 established a public land policy with one section, Section 16, set aside for public schools in the Northwest Territory. That territory would later become the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. With this law the federal government recognized the importance of public education even before Michigan became a state in 1837. The Buchanan area supported a vibrant Native population for thousands of years prior to European arrival. According to National Geographic, Natives had settlements on Moccasin Bluff along the river for over 8,000 years. The elders taught the youth the many skills needed.
