Timeline 2010s

  • Eighth grade added to the high school again in the fall of 2011.  This was the first time in almost forty years that we educated eighth grade students in the building.
  • Buchanan High School received the honor of being the nicest school in America as a result of its “Mean Stinks” campaign in 2013.  Bullying would not be tolerated at Buchanan High School.
  • As a new effort by MHSAA in 2013, Buchanan High School became involved in the Michigan statewide “Battle of the Fans.”  Revived student spirit became a standard at the high school and involved younger students as well. Guests were welcomed to THE WOODS at athletic events. Bucky, the mascot, became a part of THE HERD in a bigger way. Life was better as a BUCK. In Battle of the Fans, Buchanan ranked in the Top 5 category in 2014 and 2015.  The Herd was a proud finalist in 2019.  Our students involved in The Herd won the Michigan BATTLE OF THE FANS Title in 2013, 2018 and into the next decade in 2020.
  • The gymnasium received a new floor and brighter lighting for games in 2017.
  • The life changing news of 2017 occurred when the BUCHANAN PROMISE became a promise to eligible graduates that they would have as much as $10,000 for post secondary education, at two year programs, four year programs, certification or degree programs in the trades. The BUCHANAN PROMISE was the result of a permanently endowed gift from the estate of Walter E. Schirmer, Jr., son of the Clark Equipment Company President. The Michigan Gateway Community Foundation assures graduates who meet certain requirements within their six eligible years this money will be there for their continued education. It must be noted that the Clark Equipment Company maintained a close relationship with Buchanan High School for many years with opportunities for students to enter the workforce at the company after graduation. Many employees of Clark Equipment continued their education through adult education courses during World War II and beyond.
  • In 2018, the High School Principal along with the Assistant Principal office moved to the first floor with a more secured entrance while the business office moved across the hall.  That same year some air conditioners added to some classrooms made fall and spring classes more comfortable.
  • Weight room renovations were completed in 2019 to upgrade the original weight room added with the auxiliary gymnasium of 2004.
  • Michigan altered requirements for graduation thus some courses dropped from the curriculum and others were added during this decade.
